You’re Not Out of the Woods Yet: Why Your Retainer is Critical

We’ve seen it time and time again: the look of pure excitement. The bouncing off the walls. The sheer, unbridled joy. Getting braces removed is always a special moment in a patient’s orthodontic journey, and we always feel blessed to witness it. But hold your horses, because treatment is far from over. In this blog, we’re going to talk about the retention phase.

Holding It All Together

The problem is that while your teeth have moved positions after you finish with braces, they haven’t set and hardened into the ligament below. Without a retainer, your teeth will simply drift back to their original positions, eliminating all of your progress! Thankfully, retainers make it all stay together.

Your retainers will keep your teeth in place long enough for them to settle permanently. At first, you’ll need to wear your retainer full time – but soon, you’ll only need to wear it at night, then slowly graduating down to every other night and eventually only a few times a week. You can clean your retainer by simply brushing it with toothpaste and soaking it in a glass with a denture-cleaning tablet every few days. When you first get your retainer, we’ll give you detailed instructions for wearing and caring for it.
