In general, you can use common sense in telling what not to eat. Hard, sticky, and sugary foods are no-go’s – hard foods can break brackets and wires, sticky foods can get caught inside your braces, and sugary foods react with bacteria in your mouth to create enamel-rotting acid. To help out, though, we’ve compiled a list with some examples of foods you should definitely avoid while you have braces. This is by no means all-inclusive, but it’s a good starting point for determining what kinds of foods to avoid.

Sticky Foods:

  • Gum (even sugar-free)
  • Licorice
  • Sugar Daddies & Babies
  • Toffee
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Caramels
  • Starburst

Hard Foods:

  • Ice (unless it’s in your water!)
  • Nuts (of any kind)
  • Hard taco shells
  • Any bread or roll with a crunchy or hard crust
  • Corn on the cob (cut off corn kernels are fine)
  • Hard fruits & vegetables like apples and carrots (fine if cut into very small pieces)
  • Bagels
  • Chips
  • Hard candies like jolly ranchers
  • Pizza crust

Avoid Sugary Foods like:

  • Cake
  • Ice Cream
  • Cookies
  • Pie
  • Candy
  • Lollipops

Once a day at most:

  • Soda
  • Sweet tea
  • Gatorade
  • Kool-Aid
  • Sugary Drinks
